The number of boats in the UK fishing fleet declined by 29% between 1996 and 2017. But fewer boats are catching more fish: In 2004 the UK had the fourth largest catch of any EU country at 652,000 tonnes, by 2014 this had grown to 752,000 tonnes - the second largest in the EU.
